Spring is on the way and it’s time to enjoy lighter and longer days, the beauty of spring flowers and the promise of sunshine. The long, dark winter days are behind us and it feels like everything is calling for a refreshing spring clean. This is a great time to revitalise and lighten your skincare routine too – I’m certainly already gravitating towards lighter moisturisers, more cleansing and exfoliation – literally waking up my skin! I’ve decided to put some of my heavier balms to one side and opt for a lovely 4 step spring skincare ritual. The great thing about this routine, is you can get creative and use products and oils that suit you or you feel drawn to.

Step 1 Cleansing: Cleansing is a very quick and easy way to make your skin feel alive, soft and nourished. Simply apply a little sweet orange cleansing cream or oil to your skin. Oils like rice bran, sweet almond and castor are all great cleansing oils. Lightly massage the cleansing cream or oil into the skin and remember you can be a little generous with your application, as we’ll be removing it again shortly. Allow a good few minutes to pass (maybe pop the kettle on) allowing the cleanser to work it’s magic and then simply remove with a hot flannel. Soak your cotton flannel in hot water, squeeze dry and press to the face. I love how my skin feels after this process! Repeat, until all traces of your cleanser are removed and your skin will look rosy and feel ready for the next step.
Step 2 Exfoliating: This is a very satisfying part of my skincare routine. I love to gently scrub all the areas that feel a bit neglected – paying special attention to areas around my nose, chin and forehead. A gentle sugar and oil scrub can magically lift away dead skin cells and let your fresh, invigorated skin glow! Exfoliation also dramatically increases your skin’s natural permeability, so removing dead skin cells quite literally allows your moisturiser to sink in and make more impact. I like to exfoliate once or twice a week, that feels more than enough for me.
Step 3 Toning: Now your skin is naturally clean and glowing, this is the perfect time for a little misting with a natural, organic flower water. I love rosewater but you can choose any flower water – you can even make your own with herbs and botanicals. I quite like to make a lavender tea, allow it to cool and then pop it in my mister bottle. (This will last a few days in the fridge). Simply mist the skin with your chosen toner, so your skin feels moist. Now just allow this to almost dry on the skin naturally.
Step 4 Moisturising: While your skin feels a little misted with toner, you might want to lock in that hydration with a nourishing moisturiser. My favourite is replenishing rose facial oil because it’s simply a powerhouse blend of divine oils! Not only does it make my skin feel wonderful, I love the aroma and how it makes me feel too. Take your moisturising oil of choice, apply a couple of drops to the palm of your hand and using clean fingertips, apply to the entire face. If your skin is dry, apply another drop or two. If you are using a scented facial oil, I like to warm it between the palms of my hands first before lifting to my face to inhale all the aromatic loveliness – then moisturise each side of my face with each hand. If you fancy getting creative, you can always make your own facial oil, here is a delightfully light recipe for Spring which is suitable for dry, sensitive and mature skin.
Spring time nourishing facial oil – simply blend and bottle.
- 1 teaspoon (5ml) evening primrose oil
- 1 teaspoon (5ml) apricot kernel oil
