The darkness is finally lifting and it’s that time of year when we welcome the return of the light, with open arms! With the increasing light, comes increasing energy. We only need to look to nature to see the resurgence has already begun around us in earnest. Splashes of spring flowers are making a welcome appearance in my garden after months of rain and cold. Just yesterday, I noticed a hedge of hawthorns full of vibrant green baby leaves already! I love this season of awakening, when we can leave the dark slumber of winter behind and face the year ahead with a spring in our step. Spring is a time of awakening and renewal and I love embracing the seasonal changes with uplifting oils and rituals that reflect nature’s own rhythms.
Spring calls for oils and aromas that feel fresh, light, expansive and gently energising. Florals and citrus oils are particularly aligned with Spring, they are bright, joyful and expressive, oils that feel a bit like bottled sunshine. Here are some of my favourite botanical allies for lifting the spirit this spring, which ones are yours?
🍊 Sweet Orange — Bottled Sunshine
Few aromas feel as immediately optimistic as sweet orange. Fresh, bright and sweet, orange has a natural affinity with joy. This oil is full of positive energy and hope and it is a wonderful decongestant for the skin and the emotions after the heaviness of winter. If you feel the need to revitalise your skincare or your mood, sweet orange will help to bring the sparkle back. Add a few drops of sweet orange to your diffuser to cleanse the air and energise your space. Add 1 drop of oil to 5ml of your night time facial moisturiser to encourage healthy circulation and tone.
🌸 Lavender — Love and Light
My favourite variety of lavender is high altitude, French Lavender. It’s aroma has extra elements of floral sweetness from a season of uninterrupted mountain sunshine. Lavender is calm and harmony in a bottle, bringing fresh, clean, light energy. Lavender is uniquely able to uplift and energise where it is needed but without stress or unnecessary hurry. Use lavender just as it is in your diffuser or in your skincare rituals – why not blend it with sweet orange for double loveliness.
🌿 Geranium — Emotional Equilibrium
A high quality geranium has a delightfully crisp green aroma with a subtle rosy note in the background. Geranium is a lovely, fragrant bridge between floral and green, earthy qualities. Traditionally used to balance mood fluctuations, geranium helps to provide a feeling of support between mind, body and the emotions, or whenever you are feeling “in between”. Geranium is a lovely choice for the unsettled mind or even unsettled skin – or if you are feeling like changes or transitions are happening too fast, whether they be seasonal or hormonal.
🌹 Rose — Expansive & Heart-Opening
Rose feels like stepping into sunlight with your eyes closed. This delightful oil lifts the spirits, soothes, calms and comforts. Rose supports and opens the heart, encourages self-compassion and feelings of joy, hope and happiness – the perfect energy for Springtime. Rose is a wonderful oil to choose if you are feeling uncertain about change or holding onto any heavy feelings. Embrace the light!
How to use your oils:
In the diffuser: Add a few drops of your chosen essential oil to your aroma diffuser or essential oil burner. You can use single oils or you can mix and match them – the great thing about flowers and fruit essential oils is that they make wonderful fragrant friends and will smell wonderful together.
In skincare: Always dilute essential oils before you use them on the skin. You could add 1 drop of lavender and 1 drop of rose essential oil to 5ml of jojoba oil. Use as a wonderful facial moisturiser, share some with your hands and décolletage. I like to rub the oils between my palms first, lift to the face and take a deep breath for a few seconds before massaging into the skin. So restorative!
Thank you for taking the time to read,
Wishing you all a wonderful Springtime,
