It isn’t always easy to find time to recharge or escape the stresses of living in this chaotic world. However, if I don’t make time to spend in nature, my mind, body and spirit really suffers. If like me, you can’t always escape to your garden, park or beach, using essential oils can be a wonderful way to get closer to the healing power of nature without leaving the house! The earth’s garden provides us with a wonderful array of oils from flowers, trees and herbs ready to use in your diffuser, oil burner, or even add them to your bathwater. How ever you use them, essential oils offer a quick and easy way to enjoy nature’s healing energies. Here are just some of my favourite oils for promoting feelings of peace, calm and tranquillity.
Frankincense – Frankincense is a powerful stress reliever. It helps to promote peacefulness and stillness of mind so this oil is ideal for anyone feeling overwhelmed or overworked. This wonderful oil can easily be used in a burner and is often the oil of choice for meditation. Even just inhaling the aroma from the bottle can be very soothing. Try a few drops with red mandarin oil in your bathwater.
Rose Geranium – Ahh I love this oil. Choose this one for feelings of fatigue and a low mood. Rose Geranium is wonderful for bringing balance to our overall wellbeing, both physically and emotionally. (It blends so nicely with lavender and lemon too!)
Ylang ylang – Ylang ylang is a natural perfume and beautifully fragrant. This oil is ideal for anyone feeling restless or fearful. It is very relaxing to the nervous system. Try combining it with patchouli oil in a massage oil, or pop them in your diffuser for a really heavenly aroma.
Lavender – Lavender has a wonderful ability to calm, relax and uplift the mood. This oil is a lovely choice for whenever you feel overwhelmed or anxious. Add a few drops of lavender oil to your oil burner/diffuser (or even your bath water) whenever you feel like you need a moment of calm. A drop or two of lavender oil on your pillow will aid a sweet sleep. Lavender blends beautifully with most other oils and will harmonise perfectly with ylang ylang, rose or frankincense.
Rose Otto – There is just something so wonderfully nurturing about rose; its uplifting scent helps to fight low mood, stress and anxiety. Rose has long been associated with love and the heart, being comforting, uplifting and bringing harmony to the sad or broken spirit. Apply a few drops to your pulse points as a natural perfume to soothe tired and fraught senses.
Roman Chamomile – Chamomile is a wonderfully kind, calm and caring oil and is super soothing when you are feeling low, moody and irritable. We love using chamomile to promote calm and quiet. Simply dilute one drop of chamomile essential oil in one tablespoon of carrier oil (such as peach kernel or apricot kernel) and use this as a soothing massage oil before bedtime. Add a drop or two to your bathwater or to sweeten your mood and promote a calm and peaceful sleep.
Essential oils give us direct access to mother nature and all she has to offer in her incredible healing garden. Essential oils give us an instant way to breathe in the cooling calm air of a pine forest, or the sweet joy of a rose garden in the height of summer. Aromas work on the mind and emotions, helping us to escape a sometimes tired body and heavy heart.
I’d love to hear about your favourites too!
